4. Cultural institutions must hire the right staff and renumerate them appropriately.

While I have focused on the curatorial team, predominantly White cultural institutions should hire black people to work on exhibitions about blackness in all roles. This creates an accessible, safe environment in which to represent blackness, particularly when grassroots organisational methods are not possible. These roles should be properly renumerated, and research into salaries and demographics can help inform how to pay people for their work and energy, since black people can feel exploited by certain institutions who fail to pay them fairly (Handson-Ellesse, 2024). Education can be a limiting factor in this, since predominantly White cultural institutions often require Masters or PHD educated employees to work on their projects, and there is a disparity in education demographics. These institutions should thus look beyond qualifications and focus on experience, talent and knowledge when hiring curators and exhibition workers to ensure a safe space is being created for all Black people who are involved in or the audience of an exhibition.
